Effective Learning Experiences

As an instructor leading course implementation, there are a number of effective learning techniques, theories and models that can be applied in andragogy. Understanding and applying techniques that can support how I relate to the learner and my role as an instructor is essential in supporting student success.

Applying Bloom’s Taxonomy when developing learning objectives helps to clearly articulate to the students the purpose of the instruction techniques, learning activities and assessments. Learning objectives are considered in all phases of planning, design, development and delivery. These objectives form the base for all interactions between myself and the students. The framework of Bloom’s Taxonomy has evolved since its initial release in 1956 to include dynamic action words to describe the six cognitive processes in “A Taxonomy for Teaching, Learning and Assessment” (2001) which include: 1) Remember, 2) Understand, 3) Apply, 4) Analyze, 5) Evaluate, and 6) Create.

Creating a positive and effective learning experience is an important priority for me and a key factor in all phases of my planning and delivery. “Learning is the process whereby knowledge is created through the transformation of experience.” (Kolb, 1984). The four-stage learning cycle identified by Kolb in which the student progresses includes: concrete experience, reflective observation of new experience, abstract conceptualization, and active experimentation. My students pass through all four quadrants as part of their effective learning experience in the course.

Kolb also developed the learning style inventory (LSI) which is a tool that I have utilized to understand the various learning preferences of the students and to identify my own preferences (Active 1, Intuitive 3, Visual 7, and Sequential 1). Ensuring that the learning experience I create appeals to all learning preferences is important.

As an instructor and life-long learner these learning techniques, theories and models have enriched my ability to create and be engaged in effective learning experiences.
